What's wrong with my window AC unit?

You may be able to get your window AC up and running without having to call for a repair call by following these simple steps!

During the summer months, nothing is more frustrating than a window or room air conditioner that suddenly stops working. Here are some troubleshooting techniques to get your window AC working again.

The problem must be identified

Our assumption is that your window air conditioner is getting power, and it is blowing either warm air or no air at all. If it isn't getting power, it's probably an outlet or circuit problem. Look at how the air conditioner sits in the window as well. If you can see daylight, the hot air from outside may be counteracting the cold air from the air conditioner.

There are four major areas where something can go wrong with the unit itself: the air flow, temperature control, control panel, and cooling system. Of these, air flow and temperature control are the easiest to troubleshoot.

The flow of air

Air flow is controlled by a fan and blower that draws air from your home over a filter and over cooling coils, before blowing it back into your room.

This problem can be fixed with a vacuum with a hose attachment, a bucket, and a screwdriver. After removing the front panel, disconnect the water drain pipe. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove the excess water from the drain pipe. You can kill bacteria and fungi by pouring vinegar or chlorine bleach into the drain pipes after removing the front panel.

The fix is simple. You just need to connect the drain pipe and drain pan together if the drain pipe keeps disconnecting easily.

If you use a vacuum cleaner, suction out standing water, and use epoxy glue to fix a drain pan crack or hole. When the drain pan has been cleaned with water, shine a flashlight through it to find leaks. Seal all leaks with epoxy glue. Replace the drain pan if there are too many cracks.

If you clean the air filters with a brush and water every four to six weeks during peak season, you can change them every four to six weeks.
