A window air conditioner's leak is one of the most common and easily resolvable issues. Most homeowners with older air conditioners have experienced leaks inside their homes (usually frozen refrigerant coils on the indoor side) or leaks on their outside walls.

The heat of summer makes it almost impossible to live comfortably without an air conditioner.

It is only natural for the air conditioner to develop issues after continuous use due to a variety of factors, including lack of proper maintenance, constant usage, and changing weather conditions. If not treated properly, this can lead to the malfunctioning of either some parts of the air conditioner or the entire unit. In severe cases, the unit could even need to be replaced. 

Air conditioners tend to leak water. While condensation and evaporation are basic functions, too much condensation, leaking, or dripping is not a good sign.  

How can an air conditioner leak be caused?

Filter clogged or dirty

When the air filter becomes clogged, dirty or blocked, it hinders the flow of air through the system, which causes the air conditioner to leak and drip. As a result, the air will freeze, and when the air conditioning is turned off or the desired air temperature is reached, the ice on the filter starts melting, allowing the water to leak.

Air Leak

Air leaks are another common cause of air conditioner leaks and drips. The air entering the air conditioner must pass through the vent in order for the air conditioner to function optimally. It is possible that faulty reasons cause air to leak. If this does not happen, the air is probably leaking, resulting in suboptimal performance.

Broken pump

A condensation pump is a device that is located below the cooling coil. Its purpose is to drain out water thoroughly so that leaks do not occur. Whenever the pump malfunctions or breaks due to dust and dirt accumulation, water drips - a clear sign that the pump is not working.

Faulty installation

A poorly installed air conditioning unit can cause water leaks. When getting the air conditioning unit installed, make sure that the front part is cooler than the rear part. This ensures that the water will be drained properly.

It is best to have an AC installed by a well-trained service professional to ensure the installation is done properly.
